      The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world, composed of over 3000 individual reefs, 900 islands, and stretches over 2300 km. In 2016 and 2017 the coral reef suffered from an unprecedented coral bleaching, which resulted in a 50 percent decline in corals across the reef.
